How We'll Sophisticate Your Foyer for a Great First Impression and Impact

When you first enter a home, your eyes wander all over the space and take it all in. You're observing your surroundings and taking in an impression even if you aren't putting it into words or formed thoughts in your head. You are affected by your surroundings everywhere you go. Even you're impacted by what’s in the foyer as you come and go, even if you’re used to it, it’s important to get the layout, materials, colors and details right!

Tip #1: Address All Sights & Smells

One of the first things you want is a clean and clear space. If you walk into clutter you're going to be aggravated. Change it up. Have a piece of furniture that catches your essentials in a beautiful way. Maybe you hide them in a cabinet or piece of furniture. Maybe the coats hang out in the open or behind a closet door. Do you have a drawer, tray or shelf for your keys, sunglasses and wallets? Find a standard space to keep everything organized and pretty.

You'll also want to consider the aromas of your foyer. Is it the general smell of the home or do you have a reed diffuser by the door? Not having a scent doesn't always draw someone's attention unless there's a bad odor wafting over from somewhere, but having a nice aroma catches one's attention. It brings a smile to my face every time I walk into my Mother-in-Laws home and catch a scent of the season by the door. It's a simple and easy touch that I appreciate every time.

Tip #2: Bring a Bench & Consider a Console

You also want to consider a bench or chair in your foyer. It's often the last stop on your way out the door and if you need your hands to put on your shoes, it's infinitely easier when seated. This is a great way to add style and make an impression in the space. Functional can be beautiful.

A console table is another way to add necessary function to the space as a place to drop keys, purses and sunglasses if you don't have room for a cabinet or built-in.

Tip #3: Focus on the Lighting

Lighting is essential in any space, not only for visibility, but setting an ambiance. Consider a beautiful pendant as a statement piece or cute lamp on the console table. It creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for you and your guests. Wall sconces can also be a great option depending on the space you have. It's a great way to accent some artwork over a console table and is a classy detail. Consider putting the lamp on a timer so that it's on in the mornings when you come out of the bedroom, goes off during the day and comes on right as you pull in your driveway each day to welcome you home. You'll be amazed at the good feelings a soft warm light can create.

Tip #4: Maximize Light & Design with Mirrors

A great design element to consider in any foyer is a mirror. Make it substantial enough to be used as a last glance before walking out the door and make it something you love to look at. Having mirrors near a light source is a great way to reflect the light around the foyer and brighten the space. The extra light often makes a space feel larger than it may be, so this is a great design trick that's easy to utilize in your foyer.

Tip #5: Sophisticate & Style the Space

Finally, don't forget your finishing touches with beautiful art, tasteful accessories and a nice sized rug. All the little details make it homey and can put the finishing touches on the tone you set for anyone entering your foyer. Consider the feelings you want people and yourself to experience when walking through the door. Find art and colors and rugs that evoke that feeling in you and use them well. Don't forget to add a touch of greenery to the space too, either florals or straight greenery. That always brings life to a space whether real or faux.

Your foyer is the first and last space your guests will see, and it's a space frequently used by you, so it's an important part of your home. You can set the tone for how people will be affected when walking in and you can impact almost all their senses here. Bonus points if you keep a chocolate or candy bowl by the door and have music playing softly in the background to complete that experience. Think about the function of where to put things neatly and keep the clutter away. Consider lights and mirror and art. Add the greenery and the rug to make it a welcoming space to be in so that the feeling of comfort and happiness envelopes all who cross your threshold. You'll be glad the effort was made.
